About Custom Cabinets and Architectural Woodwork

Purchase Cabinets and Architectural Woodwork That Add Value

Cabinetry and architectural woodwork take many shapes and forms. It makes a space functional and as some of the most visible architectural elements in any space, it defines and finishes the space. Therefore, purchasing custom cabinetry and architectural woodwork should be considered an investment in the property that adds value. Because not all cabinetry is built the same, you must look beyond the surface to see what you are buying.

Meet With the Cabinet Maker to Know What You're Buying

Cabinet shops provide different services and build their products differently, so it's beneficial to meet with the cabinet maker. Have a conversation about what you need, what they do, and whether or not they can meet your needs.

To Receive a Comprehensive Cost Proposal Provide This Key Information

Every company prepares their cost proposals differently. To receive a comprehensive cost proposal it's helpful that you provide the cabinet shop as much of the following information as you can in the architectural plans and specifications.

  1. Dimensioned plan and elevation drawings
  2. Specifications:
    • Cabinet type
    • Materials
    • Style
    • Hardware
    • Accessories
    • Finish
    • AWI Quality Standard (if applicable)
  3. Site specific notes - i.e.: if you need installation included, date the site will be ready for delivery, access restrictions, etc.

Don't know what to specify? Here's where a good relationship with your cabinet maker makes a difference.

Key Items to Look For in the Cost Proposal

When you receive the cost proposal don't just look at the bottom line. Looking just at the bottom line doesn't tell you the whole story. Here are key items to look for in the cost proposal.

  1. Did they bid what was specified in your plans?
  2. Is delivery and installation included?
  3. Does the proposal list what's not included in the cost?
  4. If you're comparing bids from multiple shops, be sure you're comparing apples to apples, and ask about the differences.

Enlist the Help of Your Senses

When purchasing cabinets, enlist the help of your senses. Visit the cabinet shop and look at, feel, and touch the cabinetry. Look for straight and square. Feel for clean, smooth edges. Listen for solid closing doors. Feel for smooth closing drawers. Don't look at just the price, look at the cabinetry.
